How do you feel about vocals in electronic music?

Post by UncleBibby » Fri Jun 15, 2012 6:06 pm

So, we really need to get to 10,000 posts for the Detune interview thing, so here's something that I think could start a good meaningful discussion. How do you feel about vocals in electronic music?

I don't mean samples of vocals from other songs, I mean original vocals that were written and sung just for that particular electronic song! I used to think it was something that didn't fit with how electronic music was supposed to work, but recently I've written and sung lyrics for 2 of my newest Pro Tools songs:

Can't Get Going (dark, thoughtful lyrics and singing)

Bathroom Party (funny, light-hearted lyrics and singing)

...and it actually makes me feel like I'm making my songs more memorable and interesting.

One thing I have noticed, is that songs with vocals typically don't have to have as much variation in the musical track as instrumental songs. It feels like the vocals make the repetition more bearable, ya know?

What do you think?
Oonts-oonts-oonts-oonts...

Vocals Work!

Just think of Kraftwerk and how they used the right lyrics and vocal styles to emphasize their electronic music!

Yeah vocals are a good way to break tracks up a bit and make them seem less repetitive definitely.
First track i ever put original vocals too:

AuxPulse, Critical Strike, DS-10 Dominator

(I will travel the world and add a lot more to this list one day)

Ah, now this is a good topic. I like vocals in music in general, but electronic music is a great landscape for singing. I love synth melodies, but at times, an 8 minute electro/techno song is really a two minute song with repeats and a bridge. I know that's not how some people would like things to be seen.
Here's a song of mine that almost didn't get vocals.

I have reason to believe that there is something wrong with your Soundcloud embed.

That took me far too long to fix.
