I'm very late on this but in my opinion there only 2 ways to make nice chiptunes

Korg ds-10 can make authentic chiptune music, but tedious to patch sounds (OSC 2 pumps out most sounds while OSC 1 is stuck on squarewave) and has small limitations (3 note arps are almost impossible). But it the most authentic official software to make chiptune.

The easiest and a very fun program to use is Rytmik Retrobits, they pick plenty of sounds from nes, gameboy, C64 and genesis. It some what similar to the Korg M01 in terms of writing patterns, and you can load 2 files at once for easy copying and pasting of patterns. It has 3 note arp support function.

Its the best out of the Rytmik series. Other than that,

Korg M01 is limited for chiptune but still possible
Rythym core alpha is difficult and is mostly provides C64 chiptune sounds
All other software lack chiptune sounds
