Stroom (Breda, 15-12-09): Moshpits and a dropped DS.

This was pretty crazy!

I did a free show some time in Utrecht where a show organizer had seen me play. He asked me if I wanted to play at a new party called Stroom (Dutch for Electricity) which would combine art (installations) and electronic dance music. So of course I said yes.

The day of the show I packed my gear, which is
  • Nintendo DS Lite (cobalt blue, with Ableton sticker :P)
  • Nintendo DSi (matte black)
  • Korg DS-10 (JP)
  • Korg DS-10 Plus Limited Edition (JP)
  • 20 meter cable 2 x RCA male to 1 x minijack.
  • 2 x RCA to jack plugs (in case of direct in instead of mixer)
I arrived in Breda and quickly found the place, De Boulevard, because 3 years ago I studied in Breda. My friend Robin made an audio installation at the entrance which made really loud electrical noises (Stroom), might have lured people inside because at the end of the evening the place was packed (200 people?). But the event was also very well promoted in the local schools/universities. Inside there were some nice artworks decorating the walls. AND there was a girl VJing (VJ Veemee) whose visuals I really liked, Nintendo DSes and stuff :).

First there we're some house/electro DJs playing, to be honest: nothing special. And then I had to get on stage, nervous as always. But the crowd was going pretty crazy, and that on a normal WEDNESDAY NIGHT. I think I started out with some softer housy stuff and ended with a mixture of dubstep and electro:

Breda seemed to be into Dubstep especially haha:

More dubstep: Haha this sounds really off measure or something. Chaos.

Hey Ds-10 Dominator, can you give us a few details of how you play live?

I often wonder how i'd go about doing it. How much stuff i'd program before and how much i'd improvise for example.

Really admire anyone that can perform live on any bit of equipment!

I use complete songs in pattern mode mainly. Switching patterns, using the mute buttons in pattern mode, tweaking synth parameters, use volume sliders in the mixer, change notes in the piano roll, use the kaosspads.... anything basically :P
