DS Lite DAC vs. original M1 DAC

The other DS synth from KORG.

DS Lite DAC vs. original M1 DAC

Postby Biopharmer » Wed Jan 12, 2011 1:53 am

I'm wondering if the M1 had a better DAC (digital to analog converter) than the DS Lite does.
Because I'm wondering if the the Korg M01 would sound more lo-fi on the DS Lite. (For instance, there's noticeable aliasing with DS-10)

Either way is cool though. I can dig the lo-fi sound.
A proud DS-10 and M01 owner. I'm using a DS Lite. Portable computer-liberated music will rule the world.

I do know that the tails of the sounds in M01 sound really aliased, like digital noisy...
I can't imagine M1 to have that...

The problem isn't exactly DS's DAC quality, it's the fact that DS itself uses 12 bit depth with audio processing. What this means is that there are only 4096 levels of volume for audio, compared to 16 bit depth of CDs that provide 65536 possible levels in volume. The lower the bit depth the more noise and quantization errors happen.
The same noise phenomena can be also noted with DS-10.

Well, in that case, bring on the 3DS Korg synth . . . . .

Cool info. I thought Nintendo was really secretive about these details, are you an NDS software developer?
