M01 Challenge - Creating a Song using only Drumkits!

Post by mistyminds » Mon May 30, 2011 4:16 am

Hi all.

I would like to introduce a fun challenge started by the
M01 users in Japan - trying to create a song using
only M01 Drumkits sounds. :D

= Rules =
- use M01 Drumkits only (SE kits/Cartoon kit/GtrElements are allowed)
- you may NOT use any other sounds including mallet instruments
- you may use all 8 tracks.
- anyone can participate!
- once you finish your song, post a link to the video or audio file
on twitter with the tag #m01jp
-----

= Hints =
Although M01 does not provide the flexibility or ease to create your
own original sounds as in DS-10, there are several ways to
"change" or distort the presets to achieve unique sounds.

ex)
1) Using the FX.
- Set the delay time to a very short interval (0-2), set SYNC=Off
then the Kick will sound like a bass.
You can use this method to set the tone of the Kick to a specific note.
- Turn SYNC ON/OFF repeatedly to create glitch sounds.
- Set the Attack = 5-6, Release = 0 and then use the Delay FX
and the presets will sound differently
- Set the delay time to a short interval to achieve a flanger-like effect.

2) Changing the preset sound's T(Pitch)
BlockL & BlockH (Minimal Kit) are very useful for this approach

3) Using the pan settings to toss the Tronica kit's beep sounds
to the left & right - this may effect the other sounds that are
being played.
-----

At this point, more than 20 people have decided to tackle this challenge.
If you listen to the results (which I will list up following this post)
you will realize that even though M01 does not allow you to
"create sounds from scratch", it gives you lots of flexibility to express your uniqueness.

After all, the following songs have been created using Drumkits only,
and there are actually many many more sounds which you can choose (and play with =D).
-----

Anyone who would like to join in on this challenge is free to do so!
Please let us hear what your Drumkit-only song sounds like!

Summary : http://togetter.com/li/137367 (Japanese lang. only sorry)

-----
[ FYI ] - this was the "Trigger" song
Below is the song created by v.Hillenbrandt.7743 which became
the trigger for others to join this challenge.
Although this song is *NOT* created by Drumkits only,
the "bass" sound in the beginning is actually a preset Kick
which was changed by using the delay effects.

More Drumkit-only songs... :)

11) [KORG M01] phaeus - finished song by @odradek7743 aka v.Hillenbrandt.7743

- Link to better quality mp3: http://7743.delphinix.ws/files/phaeus(KORG%20M01).mp3
Comments:
The texture and quality of this song leaves no excuse for any song to have
limitations just because it was composed solely with M01 (@monotw)

12) 【KORG M01】7cartoonkits&1Totailkit by @vanovat
http://soundcloud.com/vanovat/korg-m01-7cartoonkits
Comments:
7cartoonkits!? :o (@daiteng)

13) Asura drummer (finished version) by @BeyeR_DS aka BeyeR
http://soundcloud.com/beyer_ds/asura-drummer
Comments:
I used NoiseKit×2、ElectroKit×2、ElectroKit×2、SEKit×2、D&BKit×1 (@BeyeR_DS)
This really sounds like it was created by BeyeR :) (@mistyminds)
You can tell this was made by BeyeR. But what I don't understand is
how you achieve this. (@ng_logo_16v)
It's amazing how all his songs have a distinct BeyeR-sound,
regardless of whether he's using DS-10 or M01 (@odradek7743 aka v.Hillenbrandt.7743)

14) M01DRFM by @monotw aka mono
http://soundcloud.com/onocchi/m01drfm
Comments:
I used MinimalKit x3, TronicaKit, GtrElement, D&BKit, NoiseKit, SEKit.
I wanted to try messing around with the release of drum sounds. (@monotw)
This one also sounds different from the others.
It starts out with a nice pace and then at the ending...! (@mistyminds)
I had an empty track so I sort of forced myself to use it for the ending  (@monotw)
Electronica! I like the balance between sound and space. (@odradek7743 aka v.Hillenbrandt.7743)

15) m01-drum by @haioku aka kowaoto
http://soundcloud.com/kowaoto/m01-drum
Comments:
Because I set the BPM to 360(!), the effects of FX seem to have decreased. (@haioku aka kowaoto)
This is REALLY DIFFERENT. It's really interesting to see that there are
so many different approaches to tackle this challenge! (@odradek7743 aka v.Hillenbrandt.7743)

16) Popbeater by @yuyu_mcrs
http://soundcloud.com/yuyu-mcrs/popbeater

17) KORG M01 DrumKit Only Test2 by @nao_21
http://soundcloud.com/nao21/drumdake2
Comments:
This is what I have now. I sort of got lost on the direction I wanted to take this.
I adjusted the volume of a couple of parts. (@nao_21)
Just around the time the Kick comes in, the delay & shuffle
increases the tension. (@odradek7743 aka v.Hillenbrandt.7743)

18) 【KORG M01】DRUMATIC by Gospely
http://www.nicozon.net/watch/sm14556101
Comments:
Note that the sequence is created by NoiseKit (@odradek7743 aka v.Hillenbrandt.7743)

19) m01 drums3 by @daiteng

Comments:
This is my third song for this challenge. (@daiteng)
Your THIRD song?! I haven't even finished my first song! lol
It starts out kind of slow then gradually build up sounding like
an industrial factory or something. Many of daiteng's songs
makes me imagine "What kind of factory?" I like this one. (@mistyminds)
He's using the delay to change the entire rhythm. (@odradek7743 aka v.Hillenbrandt.7743)

20) [M01] Drumkit Only by @natuki_suzu
http://www.nicozon.net/watch/sm14562589
Comments:
I believe this is the first approach to Shuffle. I like the
way the Kick is placed, and the unique sounds. (@odradek7743 aka v.Hillenbrandt.7743)

More Drumkit-only songs!
This is where we start hearing some dance music. ;)

21) Live play by @CardiacTrance
http://twaud.io/rRl6
Comments:
I made this in about 1 hour. I didn't tweak to distort. (@CardiacTrance)
Ooohhh!! This is my favorite so far! I wonder how the
you got the tones that sound like wooden blocks? (@mistyminds)
I am wondering how I can finish a Drumkit-only song without distorting
any of the sounds... (@nao_21)
Cool! I like how you concentrated on structuring the rhythm. (@monotw)
Carefully closing up on the juicy notes while keeping the four on the floor base.
I see precision. (@odradek7743 aka v.Hillenbrandt.7743)

22) KORG M01 Drum Pattern Only "Click-Tech" by (@wa_ta_na_be aka Kaoru Watanabe)

Comments:
I am just about to break my DS's select button! (Kaoru Watanabe)
Awesome!!!! (@nao_21)
Incredibly Cool! I'd love to hear this on the dance floor :) (@xtraxtw)
Wow!!!! This is an awesome song regardless of the Drumkit-only rule!
I like the part where it sounds like it's talking (@mistyminds)
Excellent use of the delay time - sounds like a flanger.
Excellent use of the select button (which cuts off the current sounds) (@monotw)
Virtual vocoder! A new trick that no one has done before!
It's amazing how precisely you control the pitch by changing the delay time,
which is a difficult trick.(@odradek7743 aka v.Hillenbrandt.7743)

23) Trial by @TuKuRu
http://twaud.io/rRnY
Comments:
I seem to have a habit of trying seven-part time :P
I used short delay on Tom2L of 01/W 118:TomKit to get
an orchestra-hit type sound. I also changed the pitch +1/-1
of the two drum sets that are each set to the Left and Right
to get a stereo-type effect (@TuKuRu)
I like the Tom sounds :) (@mistyminds)

24) Blindness by @MousouMan
http://soundcloud.com/mou-2/blindness
Comments:
I used - Dance kit Cymbal kit Rock kit Analog kit Noise kit GtrElement D&B kit Perc kit (@Mousouman)
The delay finely disperses the individual notes while
the PowerKit provides a powerful groove.(@odradek7743 aka v.Hillenbrandt.7743)

25) [KORG M01] phaeus[sphaera] - self-remix of the song
originally posted by @odradek7743 aka v.Hillenbrandt.7743

- Link to better quality mp3: http://7743.delphinix.ws/files/phaeus[sphaera].mp3
Comments:
Using the Minimal Kit to create the sequence seemed like fun, so I gave it a try.
I accidentally overwrote the original song data while working on this version
(@odradek7743 aka v.Hillenbrandt.7743)
I like this version more than the original one!
Very catchy with cute tones but the beat is really cool. (@mistyminds)

26) KitLoop【KORG M01】 by @sugishow
http://soundcloud.com/sugishow/kit-loop
Comments:
I made this about four months ago.
Does this meet the criteria of the challenge? (@sugishow)
I like the bass created by using the SE (@odradek7743 aka v.Hillenbrandt.7743)

27) Rain by @ChiffonP
http://soundcloud.com/chiffoncalvados/rain
Comments:
I used - R&Bkit Analogkit Noisekit D&Bkit Perckit1 Rockkit X 2
I felt I need to improve my sense of rhythm.
This was a good challenge. (@ChiffonP)
I like how the main tone changes and also how you used Zap + delay (@odradek7743 aka v.Hillenbrandt.7743)

28) Crazy Horse by @xtraxtw aka X-traX
http://soundcloud.com/x-trax/crazy-horse
Comments:
Another awesome track! (@odradek7743 aka v.Hillenbrandt.7743)

Love the Yakan DS track and the two ng logo tracks are great, it's great how industrial these guys make the m01 sound. Obviously the v.Hillenbrandt.7743 tracks are freakin awesome too. LOVE the break up on Asura Drummer, wish the whole track was that trippy. Love the spacing in Monotw's track. How funky is Popbeater by yuyu_mcrs!? Click Tech is really well put together also.

I almost find it hard to believe that some of this was done on the M01...

Hi davidevoid!

Thank you for your comments :)

Please excuse me to translate your comments into Japanese for
the participating players who understand Japanese better than English ;)

BTW - ALL of these tracks were created using *only* M01! =D

Thanks! ;)

Many thanks for all the interesting tips. I realize I'm missing a lot on M01 by focusing on what makes it different from DS-10 (and likely because I'm not as capable and imaginative musician as many of the posted above...). Drums are not my thing, but I'll try to make a drum only song and learn something from all this japanese people by the way.

I've been making my way through these. Interesting approaches. Particular favorites are 10, 11,12.

I'm working one this challenge right now. We'll see how it turns out. :?

I FINALLY finished my Drumkits Only song!
Here it is...!

34) M01 Drumkits Only Sandy and Wet by mistyminds
http://soundcloud.com/mistyminds/m01-m0 ... only-sandy
Comments:
It took me nearly 8 weeks to finish this due to my short-span
concentration, but I am pretty happy with what I got.
The only thing that bothers me is that it sounds very
different depending on the speakers/headphones you use. :-|
Headphone recommended. (@mistyminds)
I like how it gradually builds up towards the end. (@Gospely_TakeDaX)
I had been waiting for your song! I see that you chose to
change the pitch of the sounds. Very very detailed work.
I especially like the break-beats-like part towards the end.
If it were me, I would have extended that part to 5 minutes! (@odradek7743 aka v.Hillenbrandt.7743)
I like the vibrating sounds. The way the modified-pitch sounds
work well with the plain drum tones is interesting.
Also, I noticed how the detailed the rhythms were not
just plainly copy&pasted. Creative work within the rules. (@monotw)

I like that track. Has a classic electro feeling to it, Roland TR 808/909 drums, effects, and a good groove.

I really like your track MistyMinds, it has a nice slow buildup for the groove.

Finally finished mine:

I almost had it done, but then got really busy... but now I have free time again and it is complete.

Here is a quote from another Board
"M01 Song of the Day (official)".

I figured that it would be better to the answer the comments
below on this Board, so here it is.

From http://ds10forum.com/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=1221 :
WMRhapsodies wrote:Very nice initiative.

And many thanks for the translations, mistymind.

Maybe you (or anyone) can help me with some other issue I've found also with the drum only thread: I can't find the way to play the nicovideo.jp videos....Am I supposed to be registered first?, and how? (google translator shows error if i try to translate the registering page).

niconico video is very popular among the DS-10/M01 users in Japan.
The problem is, you need to have an account to play the videos.
However, I think there are sites that mirror the videos
so that people who cannot access nicovideo can play them.

If you can give me some time, I can try to figure out those
links so that you can playback the nicovideos.
(But I am currently a bit busy, so please give me some time :) )

Another problem about listening to some of the tunes in this challenge
is that twaudio has been shut down and we cannot playback
those tunes that were posted to twaudio :(

Anyway, I will try to see if there are any mirror sites for
the nicovideos (I am pretty sure that there are a few)
so please give me some time.

Thanks,
