My First M01

Post by bryface » Mon Sep 20, 2010 7:27 pm

Looks like there are some videos that go more in depth about the korg M01's features. Seems like an ongoing series too?

#1:

- using the KAOSS pad on a drum patch alters the rhythms of the beat, adding or removing elements depending on the x/y coordinates. this is going to make live playing of drums much more dynamic since you can shape in realtime how bare or busy you want your beat to be.
- one of the drum patches sounds kinda like the amen break. that's pretty cool.

Haha that is definetly sampled from the amen break. Awesome, I was already thinking M01 would be a great rave machine with the orchestral stabs and stuff, but now I'm sure it will rave!

I think the whole fun of M01 is doing as much as you can with only presets/samples, the complete opposite of DS-10 :).

I'm hoping I can do some crazy Hi-Fi j-pop stuff with it. I'm excited about this.

Originally i was a little bit concerned because there's less control over shaping the overall sound, but i guess that's merely just another challenge in of itself. luckily it sounds like there are some decent sounds in there.

i'm glad the 16-note-per-pattern limit is being done away with - it'll make it a lot easier to work on melodies as opposed to just short riffs.

i wonder if there are some patch kits that are going to be exclusive to the M01 and not the original M1 synth?

of course an awesome thing to do is to download preset packs from the internet...

I just hope it has congas. Did the original M1 had them?

I believe it did. If I recall it had a pretty full drum bank.

Oh, you are right, it has congas! It was a big let down for me when I got my Kaossilator and realized I couldn't use the included congas the way I wanted, so this is great. :D

It has a step sequencer, a bigger one than DS-10...

It's a shame they spent time on making that effect when you touch the x/y pad instead of adding a grid, which would be very useful. I've just modded my kaossilator with a grid, but it's not an option on the DS.

Do you mean the guitar?

I think they're just showing a comparison, that it's easier to play chords on M01 than on a guitar...

some more videos!

i think this one just going into the sequence/pattern mode in a little more detail:

and the following video shows some other details about note entry and other song parameters like tempo/swing.

- more flexible gate settings for notes -- looks like you can set a note's length to a higher precision - i think this explains how things like flams, rolls and grace note articulation is possible in the demo songs i've heard.
- if you're wondering how the kaoss pad's chord mode seems more intelligent in picking musically appropriate notes, it seems that this is done by specifying a scale and mode to use for the kaoss pad.
- reverb will have 3 main settings: hall, room and spring.

one thing i was relieved about when seeing these videos is that the Korg M01 is going to be compatible with the regular nintendo DS and DS lite.

M01 #4

Editing a kaoss melody on the sequencer

Glad to see all this copy/paste and move functions I think we all missed at DS10.
