10.000 posts = interview with K. Inoue and N. Sano

Post by DS-10 Dominator » Mon Nov 21, 2011 2:07 pm

I had contact with DS-10 programmer Kazuhito Inoue and DS-10 producer Nobuyoshi Sano and they agreed on doing a special retrospective interview on the KORG DS-10 project when we reach 10.000 posts.

Who has ideas or suggestions for this? Think of some good questions :)

Well, I think we all want to know if there are plans for the 3DS. Like a new Korg Synth or maybe an Updated DS-10+ for 3DSware. Imagine having a DS-10 in your 3DS (or DSi) so we never need to carry carts anymore :D. That would be awesome.

Ah, that's nice!.

Anything about the future would be great, I also would like to know if they have plans for Wii-U and iOS devices, and which is their relationship with Korg, as if they are free to come with any project and with whatever features they had in mind, or otherwise they have to negotiate them with Korg.

But I particularly would like to know how DS-10 origins were, where the idea came from, which design difficulties they found and how overcame them, and how was received by both Korg an Nintendo.

I'm wondering is he sees any potential in releasing an official Korg DS-10 compilation in cooperation with us. Real pressed CD's with artwork and bio's.

Oh God! This is brilliant! Sano is a Genius!
I want to ask him to get rid of Region Lock!!! :)

But I also want a 3ds Korg with Live pitch bend on the circle pad. . . . . - I also want the display in colour - different colours for A Deck and B Deck. . . . . . . . also better options when linking consoles. . . .we have so much more processing power. . . . :) oh let's just ask him for everything!!!!! :)

Let's not focus on feature requests. It shouldn't be about demanding things.

Although we could talk about a couple of them. Removing the regio lock is of course not in his power, one could wonder if NDS is the right platform for the future though...

Agreed.

I would like to know if they are surprised/pleased that the ds10 has become more than just a game/toy and has a dedicated user base of musicians, or was that always their intention?

I would like to know...
Are there any code tricks (in DS-10) you're particularly proud of - any cool solutions or fancy optimizations?

I'd like to know,

What sort of difficulties were there during development, like certain functions not working correctly, and how was that sorted out? Were any features ultimately left out? (aside from the extras that DS10+ has of course) And, how much time was spent in total on the project? (months? years?)

Why did they chose to make the drum patches a sample?

Whose idea was it to incorporate the sequencer and Kaoss pad? (The sequencer is absolutely necessary but the Kaoss pad could have been left out. But I for one am glad it was not!)

Why no polyphony on an individual synth patch? Processing power?

How does the internal , hidden, compression work? What ratio does it follow? What kind of attack and release?

What's the deal wiith the click glitch?

How true is the emulation? Was an actual MS-10 taken apart and each and every circuit path and variations thereof tested and measured? What discrepancies exist that are known? Surely every possible sound that could possibly be made with the MS-10 wasn't taken into account, was it?

Are you proud of your work? I know we all appreciate it! :)

I'm sure I could think of many, many more questions...

I'd ask how the sales are going, I'd probably wanna ask about their future plans for music-related software, and of course ask if they knew people were still going to be using their products three years later.

Also, have fans come up with any ways to use it that they didn't think of when they made it?

Hey, three more questions here:

-Which other musical gear (besides MS-10 and M-1) is/has been their favourite?
-Are they interested in developing more experimental, audiovisual interfaces, like, as example, Reactable?
-What about the differences between DS-10 and iMS-20, why they choose the analog-like sequencer instead of the DS-10 piano-roll?

i actually would like to know the decision process regarding the 4 drum channels. Was there a possible alternative? Could they have put 1 or maybe 2 more full-fledged synthesizer channels (like VCO1 and 2) instead? Just wondering as it doesn't really matter that much. To me, ds-10 (as it is) is the greatest music making tool ever made, and I can be quoted on that.

BTW I think this would be super awesome if everyone put up their questions in Video format, so we can edit one Q&A video from it...

just 1 more post guys!! who will be the person to cross the 10,000 mark?? =)

i have a few questions:

- have there been any other synthesizers/machines that were considered for emulation, other than the Korg MS-10 and the Korg M1?

- were you requested or required, for any time, to only emulate KORG products?

- were there any really famous people (VGM composers, celebrities, personal heroes) that know about your products or have used them? which of these people made you the most proud or excited? (for example, "i can't believe [this person] is using the DS-10! that's amazing!")

- what's one story (involving someone from the DS-10 community) that makes you the most proud of your work?

- looking back, what do you feel was the DS-10's ultimate goal and legacy? do you feel that you achieved it? do you feel there was any area where it fell short, in terms of its impact on people?

We're gonna do it a little differently.

Everyone can ask 2 question, one to Sano (producer), one to Inoue (programmer)!
Question must be asked on video.
Send the video to me contact @ ds10 dominator .com
I'll edit them into the questions video and send them over to Sano and Inoue, and hope they'll edit the answers in the video!
