Hi people,

I'm already stoked to put up a second compilation album. I was thinking about maybe a western classical music compilation. One of the ideas behind this is that I want to try to get contributors working less with 16 step loops, to see how that will work out. And to move away from electronic genres for a change (although it will still sound electronic), or maybe we'll come up with new electronic sounds in the process.

It would be cool if we could have differentt entries cover different periods of time.

Early
Medieval (500–1400)
Renaissance (1400–1600)
Baroque (1600–1760)

Common practice
Baroque (1600–1760)
Classical (1730–1820)
Romantic (1815–1910)

Modern and contemporary
20th-century (1900–2000)
Contemporary (1975–present)
21st-century (2000–present)

I'm actually working a DS-10 track inspired by a 1979 song of German singer Udo Jürgens. It's from an animated television series for kids:

As i wrote, it's only inspired by the song and no 1-to-1 copy (at the moment it seems i got some problems with limited quantity of patterns .. the DS-10 and me are still in the phase of getting friends )

Hey deap, I remember that cartoon! Although it had a different theme in the Canadian version.

I think the classical compilation is a great idea. Maybe I'll get to work on some Satie or maybe Ligeti though that may be quite a challenge. Steve Reich or Phillip Glass would be interesting to try. Bach always lends itself to electronic interpretations as well.

If you want do to the minimal music period you could use 2 x DS-10 with different BPMs :0

By the way: I think this compilation should be DS-10 only.

This sounds very interesting. :)
Classical music with only a DS-10 sounds like a great challenge.
...I think I'm going to get started soon; I want to be a part of this!

I'll take some inspiration from my absolute favourite pianist: Yanni.

Now, two questions.
~Does the song need to be a cover of a real song? Or can I write a song that sounds classical?
~Korg DS-10 Plus will be excluded in this compilation. Single mode will be just fine, right?

Cool to see some people getting enthusiastic.

- DS-10 or DS-10 Plus. Would be fun to see what people come up with within these limitations.

- I'd say not a cover but inspired by something.

- Tracks between 6 and 8 minutes.

Don't know if I can do it, but I'll try some medieval stuff.

Ok cool, I guess that's the folk/troubadour/royal ministrel/madrigal? kind of music. You can do some more youtube search on these terms to narrow down your interest if you need to.

And there's more left to choose from in the medieval period, especially the church music: gregorian chant, organum, motet, early polyphony, etc.

I'd love to have a go at this on ds-10. I think it might squeeze into its limited patterns. Even if it doesn't the bit that fits would be worth doing.

I learned to play it on piano a few years ago and then decided to do a cover using nitrotracker but never got round to finishing it.

By the way, are we just doing covers of classical music or are original compositions in the style of classics okay?

Okay Chris, I'm thinking of doing Gnossienne #4 by Satie (patterns permitting). I think there is enough repetition in Satie to make a go of it-at least in the accompaniment. I'm also thinking of doing a two or three part Bach Invention because they're cool and relatively straight rhythmically. Oh yeah, have you heard the Debussy arrangement of Gymnopedie #1? It may be good for inspiration.

Gnossienne #4 is a very cool bit of music, i've just youtube'd it as i've never heard it before. I'm not the most knowledgeable bloke when it comes to classical music, i just know what i've learned from piano lessons and the tracks they pick for tv and movies, which tend to be good luckily!

I just checked out Debussy arrangement of #1, quite why he decided to swap the numbering to #3 is beyond me, very confusing. Very nice though thanks for the heads up on that onem as it should give me some ideas about voiceing.

Luckily with #1 the ryhthm is straight crotchets all the way through so each pattern could contain 4 bars of 3/4 in 12 steps so it should all fit with its repeated bits. Below is my abandoned attempt to cover it on Nitrotracker, i should be able to get a lot more expression into it on ds-10 with all the realtime modulation trickery. The samples i used came from my casio mt-68 by the way.

I think every track should be a remix/remake/'inspired by' track, to not make it too frustrating.
