The classical theme kind of failed, anyone got other ideas?

I think the challenge of recreating an established piece is more enticing than writing a piece influenced by Bach, Mozart etc...

Ew. I actually liked the classical comp a lot, but I guess the appeal of the first comp was that it was just a bunch of titles, and people could do whatever style of music they wanted for each one. I mean, if you create a topic here and over at 8bc and are just like, "here's the comp, put your name in the hat," people will definitely contribute. You just gotta drop the gavel.

Ha, I mean a interpreting a classical work. Like I said before I'd love to try my hand at some Satie.

How about a set of 70's covers? Not sure how doable that is but lately I've been listening to some old Emerson, Lake, and Palmer, as well as Yes and whatever old synth/rock I can think of.

I also liked the classical theme idea but never got a good start on anything.

Ha ha. An all DS-10 "Tales From Topographic Oceans".
But seriously, like Decktonic says, an "anything goes " comp can be done in a second. Just submit your tunes. I actually think some sort of themed comp could attract some attention. All classical, 70's prog rock, Lady Gaga (hmmm), Blondie, Iron Maiden, whatever...
It worked for the Beatles - do a bunch of covers then sneak in your own tunes.
By the way, I love Health and Safety, quality all 'round; and I fully support any future all original compilations.

Hmmm, tough one.

I really liked the way the original comp was put together, with a central theme and titles inpiring a body of original works all tied together, i found it really inspiring. I think that's because it totally the opposite way round to how i usually work. I'm not sure i'd be quite so inspired making a cover of a song, mostly because when i've done covers in the past i've always ended up doing as close of a clone to the original as i can, which is an instinct i'll have to fight if its a covers comp. I'm stumped when it comes to an original theme idea though, i suck at that.

Which ever way it goes, i'm in regardless :D

Compilation using a certain bpm maybe ?
Then i could make a megamix using segments from each song to promote it B-)

I've listen to Drukqs very times in this week and some Aphex Twin works. Here some ideas of mine:

1) Some ambient techno with piano pieces would be good like Drukqs.
2) Some recriation of RPG OST pieces or creation of one.
3) Maybe a "electro-opera", when all songs make a one end.
4) The classical idea was SUPERB, but I was without my NDS, so I'll continue with Classical idea.
5) Some neo-psychodelia would be good too (like Animal Collective; see "My Girls" video)

Well, that was my idea for the next compilation.

i'll definately provide a piece to your complilation, though not if you want a re-creation of classical compositions.

i think harley has a great idea when he said it be BPM based.
or perhaps a genre specific compilation?

or maybe something more dorky, like a sci fi themed comp... or horror, etc...

Sounds like a great idea!

I think IDM suits me perfectly, but classic Electro sounds tempting to....

OK here's the deal.

1) Pick an electronic genre of choice. (Use wikipedia or other site as a start)
2) Look up 3 youtube videos for inspiration, and post them.
3) Describe as good as you can (as one average for the three videos):

1- Song structure (Intro-Drop-Intermezzo-Drop-Outro, Verse-Chorus-Verse-Bridge-Chorus-Verse, etc.)
2- The BPM (100, 200, etc)
3- The swing (50, 60, etc)
4- The groove (4-to-the-floor, breakbeat with ghostnotes, etc)
5- The kick (pitch envelope, analogue or digital sounding, distorted or clean etc).
6- The cymbals/hi-hats (offbeat, onbeat, 909-like, 808-like, etc)
7- The snare (gated, reverbed, 909-like, 808-like, noisy or tom-like, clap, pre-clap etc.)
8- Other percussion/drums (synthesized or sampled?)
9- The bass synth (waveform, lfo, groove, octave-disco style, drone, fifth-harmonic, octave-harmonics, etc.)
10- The synths (pads, strings, leads, waveform, pulsewidth (modulation), disharmonics, harmonics, delays, etc.)
11- Most important effects (reversing, pitched samples, stuttering, distortion, reverb)
12- Anything else.

Within the brackets are examples, write whatever YOU think is important, but be detailed, make a plan. I'm including this step because I notice a lot of people try to copy a genre but really haven't analysed it well enough and something as small as a different swing can mean you're missing the energy of it.

Who goes through this effort can claim his/her genre.

Deadline is probably end of august.
