1) Genre: Dark Ambient
2) Videos as inspiration:

3) Make chords based on lucid dreaming that I sometimes, exaggerate the use of delay and reverb... and the other? try to make music is good, revising an error of chords and other things more.

Song Title: 0+0
(I can't attach a mp3 here, so here's a link to mediafire)
http://www.mediafire.com/?kwikzlze3m3

1. Song structure: Intro chords/Modification of chords and modwheeling/Outro
2. The BPM: 91
3. Swing: 50
4. The groove: pseudo-scary, intriguing, dramatic, Atmospheric and trippy
5 ~ 8: non
9. The bass synth: drone
10. The synths: delays
11. Most important effects: reverb, delay, modwheeling
12. Anything else: This is the first attempt to get in this compilation.

Oké my turn.....

1) Genre: IDM

2)

3) Three tracks with highly detailted romance and the perfect combination of classic analogue hardware and computersoftware.

1 - Highly diverse since IDM has many different styles. But mainly alternating drumsequences, off- and onbeat. Long repetitive synth melodies that change during the track, but in a way you would not notice it at first.

2 - from 70 to 180

3 - Same with swing. In Korg DS-10 terms....I would say 50 to 68

4- Polyrhythmic and anything between 8th and 16th trip

5 - Kicks are mostly clean, bassy and digital.

6 - IDM from the early 90's was made with the plain 909, 808 and 606. Checkout Incunabula from Autechre. This was released in 1993. Beautiful album!

7 - Same for the snares. A lot off tracks have automated panning on snares for surrounding effect.

8 - Nowadays all percussion is sampled or synthesized.

9 - There is not really a specific bass synth.

10 - From Yamaha GX-1 to a Casio VL-Tone;) But I'm afraid VST's are taking over the real deal.

11 - Loads of effects. Delay's, reverb, chorus, grain filter, HPF,LPF, BPF, PKG, agressive LFO use and further.

Personally, I think the most important thing about IDM is emotion and mystery. Just a journey of beautiful sounds and perfect detail. Nuff said.......

Genre : Electrofunk

1- Song structure (Intro-Drop-Intermezzo-Drop-Outro, Verse-Chorus-Verse-Bridge-Chorus-Verse, etc.)

Typically quite pop-like song structure (esp. if a vocoder tune, which i plan on doing)
Intro-Verse-Chorus-Verse-Breakdown-Chorus etc.

2- The BPM (100, 200, etc)
110-140. Old school is lower bpm (118ish, sometimes lower. Newer stuff is typically 130bpm+)

3- The swing (50, 60, etc)

No swing normally. Music for robots!

4- The groove (4-to-the-floor, breakbeat with ghostnotes, etc)

Typically funk influenced breakbeats, k---s--k--k-s---

5- The kick (pitch envelope, analogue or digital sounding, distorted or clean etc).

Normally booming - 808 style low bassy kick.

6- The cymbals/hi-hats (offbeat, onbeat, 909-like, 808-like, etc)

Crisp - 808 style.

7- The snare (gated, reverbed, 909-like, 808-like, noisy or tom-like, clap, pre-clap etc.)

808 again! + Clap.

8- Other percussion/drums (synthesized or sampled?)

Hi-resonance 'zap' sounds and clicks (from the 808/606 trigger out). And cowbell! Yay!

9- The bass synth (waveform, lfo, groove, octave-disco style, drone, fifth-harmonic, octave-harmonics, etc.)

Fat bass,think moog, juno etc.

10- The synths (pads, strings, leads, waveform, pulsewidth (modulation), disharmonics, harmonics, delays, etc.)

PWM strings!

11- Most important effects (reversing, pitched samples, stuttering, distortion, reverb)

Delay on arpeggiated synths.

12- Anything else.
Vocoder vocals! (I plan to use a second DS thru a vocoder for vox ;) - or maybe thru my talkbox :))

Youtube examples :

Jonzun Crew - We are the Jonzun Crew

Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five - Scorpio

Dynamix II - Bass Generator

That's a really good idea (the dance music history thing) and the list that DS10 Dom. has put together is a really good way to pick genres apart, i don't think i've ever tried to do that in such detail before. I reakon i'll copy/paste that for future reference :D

Well, i was going to choose breakbeat but having listened to a few of my fav breaks tracks i'm not sure i'm capable of getting good breaks out of ds-10. Hmmm, i may choose something else...

genres with sampled drum loops/breaks are a great challenge indeed, not impossible, but you simply have to put more work in the drums

Genre - 8bit Chiptune, of the needlessly fast and happy type.

1- Structure- Fast happy childlike pop based stucture looping over and over and over
2- BPM- 130-200
3- Swing- Very straight, ie swing 50
4- Groove- Happy pop vibes, driving melodic and bass hooks, mostly major chords.
5- Kick- pitch sweep square, lofi sample or wave table generated
6- Snare- ultra crunchy, noise generator or wave table generated
7- Cymbal- Tight noisey closed hi-hats or open noisey splashy hi-hats.
8- Other percussion- possibly some tom tom action, sounding a lot like pitched up kicks
9- Bass- lots of 100% sustain envelope bass alternating between octaves
10- Synth- Very melodic, lots of trills, lots of arp and plenty of pwm
11- Fx- None, dryer than nevada cream crackers
12- Should probably sound like its making rainbows come out of your ears, or something.

Besides the obvious 16th note arps I have a cheaty method: :D

viewtopic.php?f=6&t=69

I haven't written anything to use it on yet. Haven't used this pwm method on anything yet either, so this track'll be a good opportunity:

aw man! you have to do homework to earn a spot on this compilation?? never been good with homework =)

analysing a genre has its merits and more DS10 artists in general should spend more deconstructing the structure of a song as an exercise, but also don't forget the danger of having preconceived notions of what elements a genre should or shouldn't have. imposing those kinds of limits on your song in a way that may hinder creativity.

anyway, i haven't decided if i want to chip in an entry this time, also because i'm working on an album of my own and i'm not sure if i have enough time.

very simple trick for chiptune: using the noise on VCO2, cause it's pitchable

Yeah it sound exactly like 8 bit computer drum sounds, must use a similar process i guess.

Is the second compilation still going ahead? shame there's not more interest.

Iv'e been away for too long, i'm a bit over worked and suffering from a little insomnia at the mo.

I've sent out some of my better stuff as demos so that stuff is out of the question, and I haven't been working on any new material with the DS10. I do have a song that could go in this comp but I don't know what genre it is and I don't have time at the moment to make one of these posts :(
