Influences

Post by cakedon » Sun May 30, 2010 5:35 am

I'm wondering what kind of music people listen to and how it influences their DS-10 tracks.

I'm really into the newer minimal techno, ghostly/spectral stuff.
Stuff like Seth Troxler, Matthew Dear.

Some slower IDM influenced dubstep like Boxcutter and Babe Rainbow as well.

I also really like Gadi Mizrahi, but a lot of his stuff is too warm to get out of a DS.

Black Moth Super Rainbow/Tobacco

Legowelt, Orgue Electronique, I-F

All of that.

Since a lot of that music is loop-based typically what I'll do is create a one measure loop that is fairly strong and sequence it muting certain tracks for variation. Sometimes I'll switch up the rhythm for a transition. If it gets too repetitive ill make the phrases longer by maybe only playing a certain track during one measure out of the phrase. I feel like thats the basis of techno/house.
Thoughts?

Daft Punk and Justice are two big inspirations for me. I have many more, but Justice is the main one that inspired me to explore heavily distorted instrument sounds in my music.

If I talk every band I am influenced or I listen, I will make a bible here, but here some: Aphex Twin, Nine Inch Nails, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Arthur Joly and Animal Collective. This artists make me open my eyes to the music world and, now, I'm making music and they are influencing me much.

inspiration in no specific order:

joy division/new order, suicide [alan vega/martin rev], gas [wolfgang voigt], tim hecker, plastikman [richie hawtin], sunn o))), earth, the angelic process, justin broadrick [jesu/godflesh/pale sketcher], meat beat manifesto, the residents, mike cadoo [bitcrush/dryft and one half of gridlock] and autechre.

i know i sound nothing like them but these are artists that had a profound effect on me as of late.

*edit: i hope that if some of you haven't heard of some these names that you look them up and listen to what they do!
sideways 'till fully bled & solid

awesome stuff zini. Joy Division is my favorite band. Sunn O))) was one of the best live shows I've seen. I'm into a lot of dark stuff, but they're not too much of an influence for my DS-10 music.

Nine Inch Nails - 12 Ghosts II. Some tracks of the album Ghosts I-IV influenced me to make my debut album "the_dEcay".

Another artist, music and album that influenced me so much. This is Aphex Twin - 54 Cymru Beats, off in Druqks.

That was the artists that was influenced me to make the_dEcay. Now I'm planning to make a "horror score" for a fictional horror game and here's what I'm listening to make this:

Akira Yamaoka - A Stray Child. He's genoius.

Forbidden Siren 1 OST - Karuwari. One of the most intelligent/scary/best game and OST I ever heard/played.

They started in the eighties in a room with an MS-10 and kicking in the table for the drums.

what synth is that at 4:05? ; )

Pet Shop Boys, The human league, Astrud, Björk, Kraftwerk, Karl Bartos, Yamo, New Order, Orbital, Daft Punk, David Bowie, The Beatles, The Beach Boys, Belle & Sebastian, Jens Lekman, Le Mans, Fangoria, The Knife... Not all is electronic, though.
Just wanted to share some of my influences. I don't know if they show up in my songs because, you know, I don't have any musical background and I just do what I can. But these are some of my main electronic/danceable idols.

Ahhh, a couple Canadian outfits. You should check out this duo from Toronto called Woodhands. They're pretty damn good. I saw them live here in Halifax and the dudes MS-20 almost tore a hole in my soul.
Oh yeah, Youtube, here they are:

Can't forget the Kraftwerk. Also AIR. Love the AIR.

This was a song I heard a while back and thought to myself, "DS10 could totally do this."

Hi there !
As many of you, I'm inspired by techno music from kraftwerk to prodigy, I'm also a fan of all the coldwave/postpunk stuff, and I really like the punk energy, the diy of the hardcore scene...
2 bands are responsible for my ds10 addiction : kap bambino and sexy sushi ! LoFi electroclash ou techpunk or weyw...
I'm also a big fan of bambule (aka cinder from cindytalk), he's mixing some sort of industrial/tribal dubstep, may be the best electro I've ever heard. And here it is :

i'd say the demoscene and my early experiences with video games are two of my biggest influences. throw a little bit of jpop in there too i suppose. I guess that's why i'm such a big fan of melody lines and arps.

at the same time, i also tend to write music as if describing imagery or action that is already in my mind at an early stage. i guess a lot of that imagery comes from the above influences as well.

also justin bieber of course

nine inch nails, KMFDM, Ministry, Depeche mode, information society, Duran duran, They might be giants, barenaked ladies, and a pile of nonspecific 80's music. Also alot of video game music from the sega genesis/super nintendo era. I would say aphex twin is on that list, but I've only heard a few of his pieces.

I could list bands, but I think the tones I get out of the DS lean towards NES 8 bit, because of my unconditional love for the music of the NES Megaman games (Especially Megaman 5, 3, and 2).
I love Ben Frost, Pink Floyd, Aphex Twin, and Primus (to name some off the cuff).
