Cloud Composed Compilation 'Oceanic'

Post by DS-10 Dominator » Mon Jan 24, 2011 2:17 pm

Just came up with this idea, it's something different that the usual compilation, the concept is as follows:

- A "Band" of 4 people is made
- DS-10, max 2 synths (old DS-10 style), no drums (shouldn't be about syncing, rather about making a soundscape)

Example:

- Artist 1 makes a 5 minute BASS DRONE
- Artist 1 exports wave/aif/flac (losless) format
- Artist 1 sends the file to Artist 2 with http://www.wetransfer.com

- Artist 2 overdubs a 5 minute AMBIENT LAYER
- Artist 2 exports wave/aif/flac (losless) format with layer 1 and 2 combined
- Artist 2 sends the file to Artist 3 with http://www.wetransfer.com

- Artist 3 overdubs a 5 minute AMBIENT LAYER 2 (maybe sparser)
- Artist 3 exports wave/aif/flac (losless) format with layer 1 and 2 and 3 combined
- Artist 3 sends the file to Artist 4 with http://www.wetransfer.com

- Artist 4 overdubs a 5 minute GLITCHY SOUNDS (maybe semi-rhythmically)
- Artist 4 exports wave/aif/flac (losless) format with layer 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 combined
- Artist 4 sends the file to [contact at ds10dominator dot com]

- Album gets released around 2014 ;)

The only thing that's missing is a cool theme like 'space'... any suggestions?

Thoughts please

I think it will help people if chords progressions are also sent. Otherwise I found the idea pretty cool, it's a shame that I suck at making ambient/drone tunes :(

I had a similar idea a few weeks ago...

Maybe 1 minute instead of 5 minutes will give this a better chance of reaching completion?

A cool theme could be the deep ocean... it's very mysterious down there.

that's a good one,

and then make story of all the 1 minute (4 layer) parts....

so each band gets the file of the last band

This sounds a little intimidating to be honest...
BUT I'LL DO IT. Sounds like fun. Interesting concept, too.
How will bands be organized? Randomly?

This sounds like a great idea! The Deep Ocean is a good concept IMO. Some thoughts I have are:
1- if everyone in the band had an NDS adapter that could make transfering the files easier and it would truly keep it all inside DS-10, But like me who doesn't, multi-tracking and sharing the waves would be the only way.

2- some notes such as BPM, swing, and chords as Geolm suggested should definitely be shared around as well

3- perhaps, if wavs are shared, some ground rules about eq'ing or otherwise effecting the files should be established
even if you just normalize a single instrument it sometimes can be tricky to layer over that. Would the final member of the band be responsible for the final "mix"?

I'm interested if anyone wants to be in a band with me, just tell me what instrument(s) you want, I'll do whatever.

AudioArtist brings up good points. Sounds good though, I'm in. Ha, I already have a bunch of bare drones for later use. I've even started a "song" where each of the 16 patterns is an independent evolving drone/soundscape, the idea being to use them to add to with other gear in a live setting.

You can count me in to!

I really like the idea, and I think this `cooperation` kicks our result, as DS-10forum and individual, to a higher level.

Sounds like an interesting idea, could lead to some interesting tracks. Count me in.

Maybe to up the production rate a little different artists could contribute to more than one track, but in different roles. So each person could write stems 1,2,3 and 4 but on different songs.

Liking the deep ocean theme, the exact opposite of deep space, relativly speaking. Could get all Bioshock. :D

I'm not in favor of sharing technical details or working with a steady bpm. If we keep it ambient there will be no beat matching fiddling in audio editors and people can work in different bpms which can create interestingly evolving drones.

Ocean sounds cool.

Maybe something like

Track 1 Surface
Track 2 100 M down
Track 3 1000 M down
Track 4 2000 M down
Track 5 5000 M down

or the other way around...

and i think we need a really cool video clip for this one :)

That's cool too. No bpm, no tech. info just no holds barred creativity. I'm good with that.

100% down with that.

How do we feel about external processing? I'm leaning towards DS-10 processing only. Thoughts/feelings?

My vote is for no external proccessing period, no eq, no nothing. I'm already going to have to record into pro-tools and share a wav because I don't have a NDS adapter. Let's just leave it there, that's as far out of the box as you can go. That's my vote.

Would like to be in on this.

DS-10 only, exporting to lossless audio is good.

How do we use the team maker? Do we have to wait until everyone is on board and then all go over and enter our names?
