If someone disagrees with me please add your voice but I think it has to do with the volume of the individual sounds which is variable indeed. I don't think you can quantify an optimum output level from the DS. I think you shouldn't top your faders but, having said that, I have come up with sounds that distort for no apparent reason- faders down, output volume down, gain staging in-effect.Infininja wrote:About where do you set the volume sliders on DS-10 to get the "right" compression?

Re: DS10Forum.com Compilation #2 - A Journey Through Space
syscrusher is right, there is no simple rule. Each sound channel has -besides the mixer fader- its own volume knob on the synth edit page. You have to rely on your ears. Distortion (or "saturation", which in fact is basically the same) often appears when one sound interferes another sound, e.g. a bass sound on Synth 1 distorts a pad sound on Synth 2. I try to avoid that when recording, because you can always add distortion/saturation/compression/whatever later using your favourite audio editor. But a distorted recording cannot be made undistorted.

Re: DS10Forum.com Compilation #2 - A Journey Through Space
Many Thanks to Harley and everyone who made this album possible!
I am so happy to have been able to slip into this wonderful compilation.
Just news that @ds10jp has volunteered to create a mirror download site
of this album for those users (mostly in Japan) who seem to be having
trouble downloading it from the original site, due to possible bandwidth issues.
http://electribe.jp/2011/01/30/ds10foru ... ugh-space/
News of this compilation has been communicated to Japanese users thru
this twitter account today, and I have already started to seem some responses...
(translation from twitter)
@syn_scean says:
"I like Anthony Seeha and Dominator The Stars.
I find it difficult to find ambient DS-10 tracks on Youtube
so it's great to find so many!"
I am so flattered. X-D
This is actually the second song I have ever made on DS-10 ;-D
Writing a song for a specific theme was something pretty new to me
(being a newbie, everything is quite new - lol) but it was so much fun!
Please know that although there are not many Japanese users in this
forum (mostly because they are shy to use English) and thus the idea
of this album was unfortunately not known much in Japan,
there are many who were interested after finding out about it.
I am sure that many of them would have wanted to join in
if they had known sooner.
I will try to let everyone know when the next idea comes up,
as there are many awesome DS-10 players in Japan (^_^)
Thanks!
mistyminds.

"...questions we may not solve" right!
Thanks Harley -and many thanks AudioArtist!
I have many times experienced this "sound interferation" thing. There are times a track seems to cannot sound really well because of this reason, no matter what you do with the mixer or individual volume settings...Even I remember once to get a sound from a drum track that fades all sound...
Also, if you set delay to top L or R, individual tracks setted to top L or R pan will easily become distorted.
But I haven´t noticed that on any of the tracks. I don't know what may be the right term then...but when I was talking about (deliberated) saturation before I was pointing to a kind of bell-reverberating sounds like some DS-10 Dominator uses on his track (or check my youtube channel for "Círculos como Iconos").

Harley, your track somehow reminds me of Depeche Mode and Pet Shop Boys! <3

Wow, I like, a lot. I heard some of your other stuff too... really impressive showcase of what can be done with DS10 and M01.
