Rottun bass

Post by SS7117 » Mon Jun 13, 2011 4:45 pm

I was wondering if it was possible to create a bass patch on the DS-10 that sounds like a certain sound that most artists from Rottun records make. Artists such as Downlink, Excision, Datsik, and Liquid Stranger. The bass sorta resembles the sound the transformers make when they are transforming in the movies. its a very unique bass. i was wondering if anyone can try to figure out how to make it cus i cant seem to get it right.

Keep in mind a lot of those sounds are deeply processed with distortions, choruses, flangers, distortions, distortions, bitcrushers, etc.., so even if you got the correct "synthetic makeup", it still wouldn't sound too close. However, I'll try my hand at this as I haven't played with DS-10 in a good while.

- You can try to make it sound metallic with chorus (small delay time) settings.
- Using square waves and square wave modulations (perhaps with fast MG speed) gives a sort of computer/robotic character.
- You could try to layer up synth 1 and 2. Use 1 for the bass and synth 2 for robotic harmonics. Then you could "bind" em together with chorus.

I've been trying to make a similar sound using the method DS-10 Dominator describes of layering synths 1 & 2.

I read somewhere that artists like Skrillex get their sound by splitting the frequencies of the bass up and applying different effects to each frequency band.

Seems like the way to go, have synth 1 & 2 playing the same notes, make a patch on synth 1 and save it and load it into synth 2 and use that as a starting point.

That is a good question seeing as how downlink and excision have some of the filthiest bass imaginable.
Although they probably do use a shit load of effects, you could suffice by using the the harmonious textures method that has been mentioned. Also maybe mess with the kaoss pad settings until you got a good feedback effect then go to the synth patch and alter the frequency...idk but I would like to find a coloration similar to that sound as well, so if you find or have found a good setting please share you're knowledge with me lol

Thanks! Lol me and my friend were watching some old episodes of Red Vs. Blue and I thought it would be funny. It was actually a part of a Datsik remix I made but ended up trashing. I just changed the notes and LFO rates and kept the drums.
