punchy Snare patch request

Post by deetak » Tue Nov 16, 2010 1:12 am

Check out this track by rweic666. I'm talking about the snare that is first heard at 0:11 - the kick-snare pattern comes in there. Does anyone know how I can make a similar punchy snare?

btw rweic666 has other great tracks. Don't know if they are like covers of or inspired by Nine Inch Nails or something, since they are always mentioned in the video information.

Open drum2, change the VCO balance to 100% noise, move the filter cutoff to about 1 o'clock, peak to a little less than that, and turn up the drive some. Then give it a little release. When step sequencing the snare hits, change the gate to (probably) either 75% or 100%.

The key to getting that "punchy" sound is the dynamic shape - having a fast decay but not to nothing, then a sharp cut off into silence. You can alter the cutoff and peak however you need to better fit your music, and to better fit with the kick.

Rweic666's songs are great, quite inspiring and slightly intimidating ;-)

Sometimes you can layer your snare with a kick for more punch. Try to experiment with the kick's pitch and gate.

@DS-10 Dominator
Agreed. Synergy with the kick sound is very important as well.
