Fake fast arppegio (C64 Stylee)
Fake fast arppegio (C64 Stylee)
Here's how to make a patch that sounds a bit like a fast arp. Its a natural extension of my chord trick
viewtopic.php?f=6&t=18
I've uploaded photo's of the knob positions to make it easy to copy.
It works by modulating osc 1 between the Root and 5th of a chord and then using osc 2 to create either a major or minor 3rd by moving its tuning with the kaoss x or y
There are plenty of other configurations of this patch to make different chords but this is the most useful one i've found.
So start off with a blank patch and set both osc's to square (for a chip tune sound).
Then set the mix slightly closer to osc 1. Osc 2 doesn't alter in pitch so this should make it sound more like an natural arp.
Tune osc 2 to a major third, ie an E above C, against syn 2 if it helps.
Then set the lfo as slow as it goes for now and wire the square lfo into osc 2's pitch.
Then tune the modulation so it makes osc 1 produce a fifth, ie a G above C
Set the LFO to sync to BPM and crank up the speed.
Then you can set the Kaoss X or Y to move osc 2's pitch. Use Hold mode rather than Smooth mode.
When you program kaoss x or y squares in the lane shown in the image it will move osc 2's tuning and produce a minor chord.
You're then free to use the envelope and filter etc as you wish.

and i'm sure neither of you are dumb, you're both synth heads afterall! I probably just need to work on my explanations.
