Snild Dolkow - From pixels born

Post by QauNuckShin » Sat Jul 16, 2011 7:16 am

Update, Tuesday July 19th:
Finished!

Old post:
http://soundcloud.com/snild-dolkow/wip-from-pixels-born

Work in progress. Title may or may not be final. Not really sure about the part that's introduced at 1:52.

I was chatting with xGx a couple of days ago, messing around on my guitar. Came up with the intro for this track, and told xGx "wait a minute, I have to record this". :D

Used the KAOSS pad (recorded, then edited in the sequencer) and the square-form MG patched into PITCH IN to get the quick 32nd notes in the blippy stuff that you hear in the intro. Using two drum patches for bass and (mostly) sub-bass, and one drum patch each for kick and snare/hihat.

The final track will end in some other way. Too much noise from re-triggering the drum sample.

As always, this is a single DS-10 (not +), without any editing.

For the video, I used the following tools (in order):
  • GIMP (open-source image editor)
  • A 234-line standard C99 program (written in gedit, compiled with gcc)
  • GNU make (for simpler compilation and for actual video generation)
  • ImageMagick (more precisely, "mogrify")
  • ffmpeg (with libx264 and libfaac)
The process:
First, I pretty much re-wrote the whole track in GIMP, resulting in this image: Image

The first 50 rows are used for instruments. The three channels (red, green, blue) are treated separately. A value of 255 (0xff) means legato. A value of 0xc0 is 100%, a value of 0x80 is 50%. 0x40 is also 50%, but on the second half of the 16th note (this was needed because of the PITCH IN/square wave patching).

The last three rows of the image are the kick and snare/hihat. The snare/hihat uses two rows; one for gate, one for brightness.

So, this is saved as a .ppm file (a very simple image format) and loaded into my C program. The C program generates the video frames, storing them as 4800 separate .ppm files. You'd think this would take time, but since I do this at a really low resolution (60x48), it finishes in about a second.

Enter ImageMagick. Using "mogrify", I upscale all the images 16x, without any filtering in order to preserve the sharp "pixels". This takes some time. A couple of minutes. Luckily, mogrify utilizes both my CPU cores, halving the time it would've taken otherwise.

Okay, so now we have our frames (intended to play at 24fps). With the help of ffmpeg, we combine them, along with the .wav file, to a complete video file. Hooray!

...of course, the above processes, with the exception of making the input image and writing the C code, was automated with the help of make. Very convenient, especially since it will notice if I change the input image and update everything else as needed.

But yeah, there you have it. The video part was made with all open source software. :D

Ridiculously cool track!!!

So you made that whole image yourself or was it derived from audio?

Thanks!

I made that whole image manually. Lots of copy/paste:ing, of course. And I made use of layers to make the whole thing easier.

It was derived from the audio in that the notes correspond with the notes being played (green for synth 1, blue for synth 2, red for drum 3 and drum 4) - but not automatically, no.

Hey, by the way.. I just got myself a facebook page. I need some fans. (hint, hint )

Shared it already on my facebook wall!

Look into the BandPage plugin for Facebook. It puts your Facebook Wall + Soundcloud + Twitter + Tour Dates all in one nice design.

That could be an idea for the future. Not right now, though - I don't really use soundcloud that much, nor twitter, and sadly, I don't think I'll be going on tour in the near future. :)

...it also integrates with youtube :).

It just makes your Facebook, ironically enough, look like Myspace (but better haha).
For people who don't 'like' you yet it can be set as the landing page, for people that like, strangly, not.

Impressive track. Those 32nd notes are the bomb. Cool sounds. Nice

The video is very cool and I love that it was mostly done manually, very old school. I love old video art like Norman McLaren and John Whitney and this reminds me a little of their work.

I promise, I tried very hard to minimize the amount of manual work! :P

Added to my page!

Yeah, it made much more sense to have the first page be a music player, rather than just a Wall or boring info page. Thanks for the tip!

This also means that all my tracks are up on SoundCloud now.
