Hello folks. Been lurking the past week or so and like what I've seen and heard.
Recently got a DS-10+ cart for my wife's old little-used DS Phat (which she consequently gave to me). I've been making experimental & avant-garde recordings for about 20 years now... off & on. I've been dabbling in circuit-bending and low-end DIY synths for the past 3 years or so. Lately I feel that things have come full-circle and are kind of clicking into place for me artistically. I hang out with a bunch of very talented artists in the Boston area of Massachusetts. Most of them are a bit more conventional than me though they are pretty supportive... I still find the majority of them just sort of roll their eyes at me when I get going about electronics and noise and stuff. So I find some solace in online communities such as this.

Anyways... just thought it was time to say hello. My chosen performance niche is ambient drone. I try to use circuit-bent, recycled or modified electronics and have an emphasis on doing things live and spontaneously sans laptop. At one of the shows I played I actually had some younger folks standing around me when I was playing my Drone Lab synth and they were saying stuff like, "What is that?" and one of them explained to the other that that was what people made electronic music on back in the "olden days" which I thought was hilarious. I believe the term he was looking for is analog! I dunno... I thought it was hilarious at the time.

I'm currently waiting on getting an R4DS cart so I can check out some of the homebrew audio apps for the DS I've been reading about. Protein really interests me.

Welcome to the board. I've already had the pleasure of checking your stuff out on soundcloud and enjoyed it very much. I look forward to hearing what you come up with on the DS.

I also dabble in outboard gear - APCs, drone and nand synths, some modular stuff, all pretty much to keep things relatively "laptop free". However I recently built a monome and require a laptop to route the midi to the outboard stuff.

Yeah, Syscrusher. I've been following you on Soundcloud as well and like your stuff... a lot, actually! It's good not be alone here with all these chiptune weirdos... just kidding!

You built a real monome? Lucky... I never seem to be able to be around when they are available. That's definitely something on my list. But I am also curious about the Bliptronic monome modification.

Oh and one more thing... in another thread you mentioned a name change to The Uncanny Valley. GREAT NAME. Just my 2 cents worth.

Heh... one of my first small shows (not on a DS) had me turn on my Drone Lab and some asshat came up immediately saying "no. no. none of that, here!" I have no idea what he thought I was going to be doing. He wound up playing "Wish You Were Here" on an acoustic guitar later... gave me douche chills. I've gotten much better responses since then.

My first and only show so far was at an artist showcase, and I was doing a combination of Ableton Live tracks on my laptop and DS10 tracks with my two DSi's. One of the ladies working the venue (who was also very drunk) assumed that because I was playing electronic dance music, that I must be a DJ, and she came up to me and requested a song. I wanted to punch her in the face.

Yeah. DJ is sort of a dirty word in my book. Not that there aren't some really talented people who use the term to describe what they do. I've done about 3 or 4 shows so far. It's kind of weird though. I would describe my music as 'background' music and certainly not something danceable. I still haven't really found a venue for what I would like to be doing. I'm not actually sure I am all that interested in playing for a live audience... but I am going to keep slugging it out. I recently saw an artist from Germany come through town here (I think he went down to NYC after) called Black to Comm who really inspired me to keep at it. But I find myself wanting to do more things online... I certainly get more positive feedback. I also have this nagging desire to play in some sort of large acoustic space full of natural reverb. Like a church or an underground cavern or something... may try busking in the subway stations this coming spring.

Me too. Although, having a monome, I kind of like my bliptronic the way it is. Run through some processing (like a monotron filter) it really comes to life. My tune "where are they taking us?" is all bliptronic and monotron actually.

Oh, and thanks for the positive feedback on the name...still under consideration...

Good ear! Yes. You do. It's a bent Casio SK-1.

Nice, I just love that typical sound. My first keyboard was a Casio CT-770, but wasn't in to music back then. That was 10 years ago. Now I use it to control my KS-Rack.
